The Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest in Munich
The Oktoberfest is one of the most famous events that occurs each and every year in Munich, Germany.
This festival starts late September and spreads into early October (hence the name),
it generally will last 16 days in total but there are variables that will make the event last a few days longer.
For example, Oktoberfest generally ends on the first Sunday in October runs 16 days prior.
It was then later modified due to the German reunification so that if the first Sunday falls on
the 1st or 2nd October the festival will run for another day making the festival 17 and 18 days long respectively.
Oktoberfest is said to be the largest annual event that still takes places as it can attract over 6
million people in the recent years and it is increasing each year without fail! The festival itself
is held on an open field in order to house everyone and the general idea revolves around beer and food
which makes it a very sociable occasion as people take part in games and activities as a group with the
same passion for Oktoberfest. If this seems like something you would be interested in you should book a
vacation while the event is due to be running so that you can experience it yourself, be warned that you
may have to book quite far in advance because there is only limited amount of space so you need to secure
yourself a place on a flight and hotel.
People from Munich take Oktoberfest just as serious as they did decades ago,
a special brew of beer is even made by certain breweries and it always begins
with the Mayor of Munich setting up a keg of the special beer on tap and claiming "O'zapft is!"
which is translated to 'It's tapped!'. The first serving of the beer always goes to the
Bavarian Prime Minister, the festival is then officially open for people to take part.
This special brew of beer is darker and stronger compared to the normal Bavarian beer served in Munich,
in both taste and alcohol measure so make sure that you don't go overboard if it's your first time.
A beer tent is set up to house thousands of people which is where the beer is kept so that
everyone knows where they can get a refill if they want one. As mentioned before, along with
beer visitors often will be able to eat some of the famous German delicacies including sausage,
chicken, cheese noodles, ox tails and many more!
